NEW BRIGHTON BASED BUILDING SERVICES COMPANY —A TONIC FOR OUR TIMES
A new company in Brighton, A Goodman, has plans to put paid to stories of builders leaving work undone and escalating costs.
Based at Brighton, Lawrence Goodman started out eighteen months ago by putting pen to paper and creating a checklist of all the things that he instinctively felt that building companies failed on when it came to project management ‘It may well be something to do with the state of the economy’, he conjectured ‘but nonetheless, what I saw was a whole raft of problems all the way from the basic no-show when it came to offering a quote through to shoddy workmanship and a complete failure to show even a nod towards professionalism with the after care side of the service’.
Eighteen months later, and with a company, extraordinarily, that seems to be thriving in the current difficult economic conditions, he seems to have hit a winning formula. ‘It was a fairly simple task’, he explains with confidence ‘I came up with five key features for a successful project, and then started to actively promote them as part of the service that I offered’.
This same practical philosophy he has engineered into his new website. ‘I wanted something bright, simple and dynamic’ he said ‘something where I could showcase work and let what I do speak for itself’.
The site certainly does all these things and a few more besides. Working closely with a couple of designers, Lawrence came up with the framework for the online profile. It is a kind of working sketch where the galleries perform the role of exploring a wide and interesting portfolio of work on the basis that every picture really does tell a story.
We asked Lawrence for more about his five step formula for success and he laughed. ‘There isn’t one really’, he explained ‘if you want the five steps outlined, I could do them in order and they would sound hackneyed, basically they are really as old as the hills and all based on common sense’. One, he emphasised was simply about attention to detail and getting things right and he drew attention to the display of a lock fitting in one of his galleries. A second was the fact that he takes a project based approach to all the commissions. ‘What people are looking for at a time like this’, he adds with his trademark keynote emphasis on professionalism, ‘is things done at the right cost, things managed properly and delivered on time and on budget, you can’t get simpler than that’.
His general view appears to be that some of these basic considerations feel by the wayside as the property boom took hold of the country and now that things have reversed, that by going back to basics may point the way forward for a new breed of company.
Judging by his new website and the work advertised, it does seem as if A. Goodman might be around a while longer to prove his point. The homepage talks about a fresh approach and speaking with Lawrence, you don’t sense someone who just cares about what he is doing, you sense you are talking to someone with real ideals and ambitions, and these could just be the right kinds of cornerstone necessary in these troubled times.
It is always said that in savage recessions the greenshoots start to appear when new companies start to think in new ways and offer new services.
It could be argued that A. Goodman as a company is offering nothing particularly new beyond a clean and honest approach coupled with common sense, but delivered up with confidence, skill and the right kind of craftsmanship, this new Brighton based outfit could well represent a tonic for our times. Just what the doctor ordered, a building services company that actually delivers the goods.
